Researcher from DTU's Biomedical Engineering Group has discovered a method to make MR scanners up to 100,000 times more sensitive. This makes it possible to immediately determine whether the cancer treatment is working or not.
Jan Henrik Ardenkjær-Larsen, Professor and member of the Biomedical Engineering Group at DTU, has developed the technique which increases the MR signal 10.000 to 100.000 times making it possible to determine if the tumours respond to treatment. At the moment, it may take several weeks before doctors are able to assess whether a given treatment is working. If not, it may be too late for the patient to start a new treatment regime.
Based on the development of this technique, the activity concerning hyperpolarized imaging is quite intense in Denmark. Activities include an international conference on hyperpolarization taking place in August 2013, arranged by DTU and other groups involved in hyperpolarization research.
Approximately 200 researchers from across the world are expected to participate.
