The Department of Electrical Engineering at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) invites applications for a postdoc position within the Automation and Control group. The postdoc position is financed the ShippingLab Autonomy Work Package   (http://shippinglab.dk/), which a joint effort between Academia and Industry.

The ShippingLab Autonomy research project has Professor Mogens Blanke as Principal Investigator and the effort is a teamwork between Postdocs and PhD Students and real-life testing and validation is an integral part of the research.

Responsibilities and tasks
We seek an ambitious team-oriented person, who wish to establish herself/himself at an international level within autonomous navigation and will be a team player in both scientific publication and experimental validation of results. You will perform internationally relevant research in the area of simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) for autonomous navigation at sea bringing together the scientific fields of multi-modal sensor fusion, optimization theory, estimation theory, computer vision, and deep learning. You will take an active role in the organization and execution of experimental campaigns at sea for data collection as well as for verification and validation of the developed technology. The developed SLAM solutions should enable/support the autonomous navigation of ships in confined waters and possibly be robust to adverse weather conditions.

You are expected to proactively engage in the preparation and finalization of scientific publications to be addressed to ISI journals and highly ranked international conferences, and to present the findings of her/his research to strongly qualified professional audiences.

You will participate in the supervision/co-supervision of MSc and BSc projects related to her/his fields of expertise. She/he may also be engaged in support to teaching activities at MSc level.

The research of this project has civilian objectives. However, equipment restricted by export licenses and ITAR (International Traffic in Arms Regulations) is being used in this research. Applicants that are citizens of Denmark, Norway and other NATO countries, Sweden, Australia, New Zealand, or Japan are eligible. Other applicants should provide evidence of eligibility to use such equipment for their application to be considered. 

Qualifications
Candidates should hold a PhD degree or equivalent, or have submitted their PhD thesis at the time of application.

Candidates should meet the following qualifications
 

  • Have a documented track record in developing SLAM solutions for outdoor navigation. The application to navigation of autonomous surface vehicles (ASVs) will be an advantage.
  • Have a documented track record in one or more of the following subjects: estimation theory; optimization theory; sensor fusion; computer vision; deep learning.
  • Have a good knowledge of dynamic calibration of vision systems
  • Have a solid expertise in developing software in Python as well as C++/C# and good knowledge of ROS (Robotic Operating System)
  • Have prior experience in preparing and performing experimental campaigns
  • Is a team player who wish to collaborate within a team and is motivated by achievements of yourself and the team

Salary and appointment terms
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. 

The employment may indicatively start on 1 December 2019 or in early 2020. The period of employment is up to 27 months, as funding is presently available until end of February 2022.
