The Acoustic Technology group at DTU Electrical Engineering conducts research in sound field analysis, acoustic signal processing, architectural acoustics, transduction, vibration and numerical methods in acoustics. As a part of a research project granted by the VILLUM foundation (“large-scale acoustic holography”), we are opening a 2-year postdoc position to carry out research in sound field analysis and acoustic signal processing.

The goal of this postdoc project is to develop novel methods to characterize the spatio-temporal properties of the sound field in a room, based on data acquired with microphone arrays and distributed sensor networks. A central element of the project is to examine theoretical models and data driven approaches to model and reconstruct the full three-dimensional sound field inside a room.

The work conducted in this project aims at enabling the characterization, capture and reproduction of the sound field in large spaces such as auditoria, concert-halls, etc. The planned work is relevant for communications, audio technology, architecture and the arts.

Responsibilities and tasks
We are looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic candidate, with a relevant PhD-degree and experience in acoustics and signal processing, who is dedicated and passionate about research, science and technology, and who enjoys the process of scientific discovery. A background in acoustics is essential, as well as skills in several of the following areas:


  • Acoustics (necessary)
  • Signal processing
  • Mathematical modelling
  • Programming skills (Python, Matlab)
  • Physics and wave propagation
  • Numerical optimization and inverse problems
  • Deep learning in audio/image processing


Having good communication skills is also a valuable asset for the position. 

As a member of the research team, you will have the opportunity to conduct fundamental research in acoustics and acoustic signal processing. The research envisioned for this project is aims at enabling a wideband characterization of the sound field in enclosures, where the spatial and temporal properties of a given sound field are inferred from experimental data. The research conducted in the project aims at examining the use of state of the art sensing methods to reconstruct sound fields (including deep-learning approaches in inverse problems, Gaussian processes, sparse reconstruction methods, Bayesian inference, acoustical holography, etc.). The specific research tasks can be reasonably adjusted based on the research interests of the candidate.

Candidates should have a PhD degree or equivalent.

Salary and terms of employment
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is 2 years.
