The Center for Electric Power and Energy (CEE) at the Department of Electrical Engineering invites applications for a PhD scholarship in close cooperation with the Danish TSO Energinet.

In Denmark, the energy system is changing rapidly to more sustainable sources, which involves the installation of wind power generation at geographical locations with high wind potential and rural areas ideal for solar power plants. That requires new transmission lines, which traditionally have been built as overhead lines. Underground power cables are instead commissioned today, due to a strong public opposition to overhead lines. Compared to overhead lines, power cables exhibit a lower failure rate, but when faulty the outage time and costs of repair are both significantly higher.


The primary objective of this PhD is to develop methods for intelligent monitoring and operation of Energinet’s more than 5000 km installed underground cables at transmission level (132 – 400 kV), using existing available data to deploy preventive maintenance regimes and safe dynamic loadability of power cables and its components, hence ensuring low-cost, safe and reliable operation during all the lifetime. In the following 8 years Energinet is to install 4200 km of new 132-150 kV underground cables, at which it is expected the intelligent monitoring solutions developed within this Ph.D. project is to be applied as well.


Responsibilities and tasks

The primary objectives of the PhD project are to expand the understanding of intelligent maintenance regimes of HV underground cable systems, including predictive maintenance routines and smart usage of DTS data including some of the following topics:  

  • Long-term technical and economic consequences of increased use of underground cables and new related technologies
  • Methods for prioritizing maintenance of critical components.
  • Monitoring and digital platforms for state estimations of the cable system incl. DTS data analysis and implementation
  • Dynamic loading of cables and aging
  • Cooperation within national and international fora.

Additional and modified tasks will occur.


Qualifications
Candidates should have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree.


Candidates may apply prior to obtaining their master's degree conditioned that they will be graduated latest May 2020.

A candidate with the following qualifications will be preferred:  

  • Knowledge about power or energy systems
  • Experience with analysis of big data and AI methods
  • Familiar with aging mechanisms and models (or ability to learn)
  • Interest in maintenance strategies for complex systems
  • Flair for good communication with many partners in Denmark and abroad
  • Ability to present results in technical reports and prepare scientific papers for publication in international journals.
  • Being self-motivated, enjoy working with complex topics, and thrive in collaboration and teamwork.

Approval and Enrolment

Salary and appointment terms
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years.
