As a Research Assistant for RTDS and hardware-in-the-loop simulations of inverter-dominated power systems you have significant impact on shaping and demonstrating viable solutions towards the realization of the North Sea Energy Hub. The goal of the RTDS and hardware-in-the-loop simulations is to demonstrate how such a zero-inertia offshore grid can maintain a stable and secure operation, while harvesting massive amounts of far offshore wind power.

You will have the opportunity to use the world-class experimental facilities at PowerlabDK, including a state-of-the-art RTDS system and a range of hardware components. ( 

This position is part of the multiDC project ( Two neighboring system operators, Energinet and Svenska Kraftnät, a major manufacturer, Hitachi ABB Power Grids, and two more universities, KTH in Sweden and the University of Liège in Belgium, participate in this project, offering the opportunity to work with an international consortium both from industry and academia.

Responsibilities and tasks
You will be responsible for the analysis and implementation of a zero-inertia and a low-inertia North Sea Energy Hub topology at the multi-rack RTDS system of PowerlabDK. This will include the connection of hardware-in-the-loop components such as power electronic converters and controllers. Besides the real-time demonstration, you will be part of a team of researchers, and you are expected to contribute to the assessment of each topology proposing solutions that will ensure the safe and reliable operation of such a grid.

Candidates should hold a two-year MSc (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year MSc.

A successful candidate will have a solid background in at least four of the following points: 

  • Knowledge of power systems analysis
  • Familiar with power electronics controls and their representation in power system dynamic simulations
  • Modeling and simulation of power systems using RTDS
  • Programming tools such as Matlab, Python, etc.
  • Excellent use of the English language
  • Ability to present results in technical reports, and prepare scientific papers for publication in international journals

An ideal candidate will also be self-motivated, would enjoy working with complex topics, and would thrive in collaboration and teamwork.

Salary and terms of employment
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is 1 year.
