The Department of Electrical Engineering and the Center for Acoustic-Mechanical Microsystems (CAMM) invite highly motivated and talented graduates to apply for a 3-year PhD position in a challenging research project on Phononic-Fluidic Sensor Systems. The goal of this PhD project is the design and realization of a new class of sensor systems by combining acoustic structures with fluidic elements containing exchangeable analytes.


With the project we aim to explore the optimization of fluidic sensor elements with an acoustic metamaterial or phononic crystal. This novel application is expected to allow highly sensitive analysis of liquids and mixtures. You will contribute to state of the art research at the boundary between engineering, physics, and material science. The project is funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG).


The focus of CAMM is to facilitate and connect research in acoustic-mechanical interaction, numerical methods and optimization, microfabrication, and acoustic measurement techniques. In collaboration with three world-leading Danish companies in hearing aids and electroacoustic devices, we combine strong expertise from DTU Electrical Engineering and DTU Mechanical Engineering to achieve this goal.


Responsibilities and tasks

In this multidisciplinary research project you will learn and apply new theoretical and experimental methods and techniques to develop existing prototype sensor concepts into practical devices. The successful outcome of this project will advance research and industrial applications covering microfluidics, (bio) chemistry, and medicine. Depending on your interests and competencies, this will involve your engagement in:

  • 3D computer aided design (CAD) of phononic-fluidic measurement cells
  • Numerical modelling and topology optimization of acoustic-mechanical structures
  • Additive manufacturing (3D-printing) of your designs
  • Experimental analysis of acoustic sensor characteristics

Prior experience with one or more of these methods is considered beneficial to your application. For these tasks you will take responsibility for project planning, data management, lab work such as fabrication and setting up and running experiments, and comprehensive documentation. You are also expected to be able to work in a highly collaborative environment inside CAMM, as well as with local and international partners. Close exchange between DTU Electrical Engineering and DTU Mechanical Engineering is expected. Fluent written and spoken English is essential.


Your PhD project will result in scientific publications of your results. You will present at international conferences as part of your research training and you can also sharpen your didactics skills through experience as teaching assistant.

Candidates should have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree in engineering, physics, material science, or related fields. Documented experience with acoustics, wave propagation, and/or sensor systems will be considered an advantage.

Salary and appointment terms

The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years.


As the PhD position is a part of a DFG funded research project it will include an external research stay at a German collaboration partner.
