The Department of Electrical Engineering at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) invites applications for a postdoc position within the Automation and Control group. The postdoc position is financed by SAFENAV project and the ShippingLab Autonomy Work Package (http://shippinglab.dk/), which aim at developing, testing and validating, in real life, innovative technologies for autonomous navigation at sea. The SAFENAV project is led by Associate Professor Roberto Galeazzi and the ShippingLab Autonomy Work Package is led by Professor Mogens Blanke.

Responsibilities and tasks
We seek an ambitious team-oriented person, who wish to establish herself/himself at an international level within autonomous navigation and will be a team player in both scientific publication and experimental validation of results. You will perform internationally relevant research in the areas of nonlinear state estimation, advanced signal processing, statistical change detection and machine learning to devise innovative methods and tools to detect and possibly neutralize cyber-attacks to the navigation and propulsion systems of an autonomous ship. The developed solutions should be able to clearly distinguish cyber-attacks from standard faults in the available sensors and actuators. Theoretical findings will be experimentally validated at sea through the testing infrastructure offered by the ShippngLab Autonomy Work Package. Within ShippingLab Autonomy Work Package you will contribute to the development of functionalities for an autonomous supervisor with specific focus on diagnosis of individual sensors for navigation, steering and propulsion.

You are expected to proactively engage in the preparation and finalization of scientific publications to be addressed to ISI journals and highly ranked international conferences and to present the findings of her/his research to strongly qualified professional audiences.

You will participate in the supervision/co-supervision of MSc and BSc projects related to her/his fields of expertise. She/he may also be engaged in support to teaching activities at MSc level. 

The research of this project has civilian objectives. However, equipment restricted by export licenses and ITAR (International Traffic in Arms Regulations) is being used in this research. Applicants that are citizens of Denmark, Norway and other NATO countries, Sweden, Australia, New Zealand, or Japan are eligible. Other applicants should provide evidence of eligibility to use such equipment for their application to be considered.

Qualifications
Candidates should hold a PhD degree or equivalent, or have submitted their PhD thesis at the time of application.

Candidates should meet the following qualifications:
 

  • Have a documented track record in one or more of the following subjects: nonlinear estimation theory; signal processing; model-based and data driven fault detection; machine learning
  • Have a documented track record in the design of navigation systems
  • Have a good knowledge of global navigation satellite systems
  • Have a solid expertise in using scientific computing software such as MATLAB and Python
  • Have prior experience in preparing and performing experimental campaigns
  • Is a team player who wish to collaborate within a team and is motivated by achievements of yourself and the team

Salary and appointment terms
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. 

The employment may indicatively start on 1 December 2019. The period of employment is up to 27 months, as funding is presently available until end of February 2022.
