The Centre for Electric Power and Energy (CEE) at the Department of Electrical Engineering, Technical University of Denmark (DTU) invites applications for a fully funded 3-year PhD position in AI for electricity market design. CEE offers a very international, diverse, and friendly atmosphere, encouraging creativity, empathy and team working within the center and beyond. This PhD position is fully funded by DTU Electrical Engineering Department.

The PhD student will join the Energy Analytics & Markets (ELMA) research group of CEE. The ELMA group (https://lnkd.in/dNBFxrc) has a strong multi-disciplinary research focus on energy markets, advanced optimization and game-theoretic algorithms, AI and energy analytics. Many former ELMA group members are currently very successful scientists either in academia or in industry.

The PhD student will have a great opportunity to build strong networks with internationally known researchers at DTU and other universities as well as industrial partners. The student will take several relevant courses (30 ECTS in total) aligned with the PhD project either in DTU or other universities. The student will also have a chance to attend several international conferences and other scientific events as well as a research stay for 3-6 months in a well-known research group outside Denmark.

About the position
The PhD student will mainly focus on how AI, in particular advanced machine learning algorithms, can contribute to designing more efficient electricity markets in terms of increased social welfare and reduced computational complexity. The student will investigate the success of AI and machine learning in designing generic marketplaces (and markets for other commodities) in the literature and will then focus on designing AI-assisted electricity markets.

Qualifications
The candidate should have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree. A good candidate will have a solid background in most of the following points: 

  • Knowledge of power systems and electricity markets
  • Knowledge of convex optimization and game theory
  • Knowledge of various machine learning techniques
  • Knowledge of programming tools such as Julia and Python
  • Excellent use of the English language
  • Ability to present results in technical reports, and prepare scientific papers for publication in international conferences and journals

Approval and Enrolment
The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU. For information about our enrolment requirements and the general planning of the PhD study programme, please see the DTU PhD Guide.

Salary and appointment terms
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years.
