DTU Electrical Engineering invites applications for a 2-year Postdoc position, which is a part of a larger research project “HEART: Super High Efficiency fAst EV charger with energy storage and gRid supporT functionality”, which is carried out in collaboration with Danfoss Drives and  managed by Professor Tomislav Dragičević who will supervise posted PostDoc position.

The project aims to develop, implement and demonstrate grid services from Grid-connected power electronic converters in fast DC EV Charging Stations. Considered services include both services such frequency / inertia support and congestion management that require active power flexibility (enabled by the optional energy storage), but also services that do not require any additional active power, but can be provided by flexible grid-connected converter control (e.g. harmonic / unbalance compensation, voltage support, etc.).

Only in Denmark, thousands of high power DC EV fast charging stations are expected to the deployed in the near future and they will occupy significant load of the grid. Therefore, there is an enormous grid service potential hidden in fast DC EV chargers.

Core goals of this project is to unlock this potential by studying and quantifying the values that can be obtained from providing various types of grid services, implementing and validating the most promising ones, and finally assessing their impact on the reliability of power converters used for service provision. 

Responsibilities and qualifications
The general task of the Postdoc candidate will primarily be to develop new grid services in individual EV-charging station grid-connected converters but also to cooperate with our IoT team to integrate the converter’s functionalities via our own cloud-based platform with a large population of other types of grid-connected converters for aggregated grid service provision and condition monitoring. The developments will primarily be carried out in the PowerLabDK, located at DTU Lyngby campus.

As a formal qualification, you must hold a PhD degree (or equivalent) in Electrical Engineering/Computer Science. In addition, you should have:

  • Knowledge about operation of power distribution grids and operation/control of grid connected converters
  • Experience in developing control methods for grid-connected converters with grid services such as frequency and voltage support, and impedance matching. Experience with advanced control algorithms and artificial intelligence is considered as advantage
  • Experience in online assessment of the lifetime and reliability of power converters based on mission-profile
  • Experience with working on control and condition monitoring of multi-converter systems
  • Knowledge of programming tools such as Python, C++, MatLab and LabView is considered an advantage
  • Being independent in laboratory, i.e. being able to set up and run test setups with grid-connected converters is considered as advantage
  • You must be fluent in English, both speaking and writing and possess excellent communication skills
  • Solid record of first-author publication in top-tier journals is seen as advantage

Salary and appointment terms
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is 2 years with starting date 1 July 2021 (can be negotiated).
